Liver Foundation observed World Hepatitis Day 2013 in Bangladesh

Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed the World Hepatitis Day 2013 on 28 July 2013 in Bangladesh. Special messages were given by Hon. President, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Hon. Prime Minister, Govt. of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, and WHO Representative to Bangladesh with special emphasis on significance of the day.
The events include Seminar, WHD 2013 souvenir, hepatitis B & C patient’s conference, , hepatitis information booths in the city, special television programs, distribution of leaflets, posters, publication of articles in the newspaper and Television drama on viral hepatitis.
The special online campaign on ‪#‎SeeHearSpeakno‬ Monkeys with popular Bangladeshi Actor Mosharraf Karim, Actress Shumaiya Shimu, Rock vocalist of Artcell band Mr. Linclon & Vice captain of Bangladesh National cricket team Mahmudullah Riyad. The campaign reaches thousands of Facebook users in home & abroad
The Inauguration seminar was held at the Auditorium of Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB), Ramna, Dhaka. The key note Speaker was Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General of Liver Foundation highlighted the viral hepatitis status in Bangladesh and described different awareness programs carried out by the Liver Foundation throughout the year.
Prof. Ali put special emphasis, that viral hepatitis should be incorporated to the national health policy and it should get preference like other communicable diseases such as HIV / AIDS / Malaria / Tuberculosis etc. The government should make a comprehensive national viral hepatitis strategy that focuses exclusively the prevention, control and treatment of viral hepatitis in Bangladesh.
He also urged the government to reschedule Hepatitis B vaccination of EPI program with implementation of “Birth Dose” Hepatitis B vaccine instead of existing 6th week dose.
National professor Brig. (Retd.) Abdul Malek attended as chief Guset and Dr. Thushara Fernando attend as special guest in the Inauguration seminar of WHD 2013. Prof. Mirza Majharul Islam chared the seminar.
A special patient’s conference for hepatitis B & C affected persons was held on July 28, 2013 on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day 2013. Hepatitis B & C affected persons, their family and friends attended from different parts of the country.
The program was enriched by power point presentations about details of hepatitis ‘B’ & ‘C’, its prevention, treatment and other aspects by Dr Md. Mohsin Kabir, Asstt. Prof. Dept. of Gastroenterology, BIRDEM and Dr. MD. Mahbubul Alam (Prince), Hepatologist & Gastroenterologist, BSMMU.
A lively question and answer session was between the participants and renowned Hepatologists & Gastro-enterologists of the country, regarding treatment, individual lifestyle of hepatitis ‘B’ & ‘C’ affected individuals and their families. The specialist panel comprises of Prof. Faruk Ahmed, Head of Gastroenterology Dhaka Medical College, Prof. Abu Sayeed, Head, Dept. of Medicine Chittagong Medical College, Prof. M. Anisur Rahman, Dept. of Gastroenterology, BIRDEM, Major General MD. Robiul Hossain, Consultant Physician General, DGMS office and Prof. Mohammad Ali, Dept. of Hepato-Biliary-Pancriatic Surgery & Liver Transplant, BIRDEM. The session was conducted by eminent health journalist Dr. Sajal Ashfaque.

This is the 3rd such patient’s conference organized by the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. The first one on June 2, 2012 at Dhaka and 2nd one on July 28, 2012 (World Hepatitis Day 2012) at Chittagong.
BBC Bangla Radio broadcasted special report on WHD 2013 in Bangladesh and a special interview with Prof. Mohammad Ali about present status of viral hepatitis in Bangladesh.
Popular drama serial “Radio Chocolate reloaded” telecasted a special episode on awareness of viral hepatitis at Desh TV on WHD 2013.
