Liver Foundation observed World Hepatitis Day 2012 in Bangladesh

13-08-12 Liver Foundation of Bangladesh observed the World Hepatitis Day 2012 on 28 July 2012 in Bangladesh. The Liver Foundation of Bangladesh staged different events at the capital city Dhaka and Chittagong. This year WHD activities were decentralized for the first time to the divisional headquarter Chittagong, a commerce and industry hub and port city of Bangladesh. Special messages on this day were given by Hon. President, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Prime Minister, Govt. of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, Minister of Health & Family welfare, Minister of Social welfare, Advisor to the Prime minister on Health & Family welfare, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, President of Bangladesh Medical Association and Honorary President of Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society. Highly encouraging message was given by the Regional Director, World Health Organization, South East Asia Region, New Delhi, India and President, World Hepatitis Alliance, Geneva, Switzerland. The events include Seminar, hepatitis B & C patient conference, hepatitis information booths in the city, special television programs, distribution of leaflets, posters and publication of articles in the newspaper of both in Dhaka and Chittagong. The special event of the day was performance of the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” actions in the Central Shaheed Minar (Martyr Monument of language movement) at Dhaka and at Jilla shilpokola academy, Chittagong. The main seminar was held at the auditorium of Jilla shilpokola academy, Chittagong. Mr Md. Manjur Alam, Mayor, Chittagong City Corporation was the Chief Guest. Prof. Mahbub Kamal Chowdhury, former Head, Dept. of medicine, Chittagong Medical College attended as special guest. The seminar was chaired by Prof. AQM Mohsen, Vice chairman, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh. Prof. Mohammad Ali, Secretary General, Liver Foundation of Bangladesh and Initiator of World Hepatitis Day observation in Bangladesh since its inception, attended as a key personal. The welcome speech was given by Mr. Golam Mostafa Kanchan, life member, Liver foundation of Bangladesh. The Key note speech was given by Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Sayeed, chief organizer, World Hepatitis Day 2012, Chittagong. Prof. Mohammad Ali in his speech put special emphasis on three major steps for controlling of Viral Hepatitis in Bangladesh. First one is to reschedule of Hepatitis B vaccination of EPI program. “Birth Dose” Hepatitis B vaccine to be started instead of existing 6th week dose. Second one is the incorporation of “viral hepatitis” to the National Health Policy of the Govt. of Bangladesh, so that it will get priority for control and treatment like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB etc. Finally, unscientific treatment of viral hepatitis by traditional healers (quakes) and its publication & advertising in the electronic and print media should be stopped, so that viral hepatitis patients will not be misguided & mistreated. Another important event of the day was Hepatitis B & C patient conference at Chittagong where more than 350 registered participants attended. At first there was power point presentation by Dr. Mohammad Yusuf, Dr. Md. Golam Azam and Dr. ASM Ahsanul Karim on different aspects of viral hepatitis. It was followed by the Question & Answer session of the patients and the Hepatologist, Gynecologist and Hepato-Biliary surgen. Prof. AQM Mohsen, Prof, Mohammad Ali, Prof. Shamsun Nahar & Prof. Md. Abu Sayeed attend as specialist. The program was highly encouraging & enthusiastic. Two special Television program on WHD 2012 was telecasted in ATN Bangla and Diganta Television on that day. There was wide media coverage both in electronic & print media of the activities of the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh on that day at both Dhaka & Chittagong.
